The Blue Jays have claimed 28-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Mike McCoy off waivers from the Rockies. McCoy played in his first 12 games of his major league career last season for the Rockies and he was 0 for 5 (.000 avg) with 1 run scored and 2 stolen bases. McCoy also played in 132 games in AAA-ball last year and he was 142 for 462 (.307 avg, .805 OPS) with 102 runs scored, 2 homers, 52 RBIs and 40 stolen bases. The Blue Jays are collecting middle infielders as it is starting to seem more likely that Marco Scutaro won’t be back in 2010.

The Toronto Blue Jays designate Bill Murphy for assignment

The Blue Jays have designated 28-year old lefty reliever Bill Murphy for assignment. Murphy pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Blue Jays last season and he was 0-0 with a 3.13 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. However, he was absolutely terrible in AAA for the Jays last season working in 45 games (0 starts) in which he was 0-6 with a 7.59 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP. Some team will likely take a chance on Murphy because he’s only 28 years old and left handed but the Blue Jays won’t miss him as they are stacked with talented lefty relievers.

The Toronto Blue Jays claim infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir off waivers

The Blue Jays have claimed 26-year old righty swinging infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir off waivers from the Cardinals. He played in 8 games last season for the Cardinals and he was 3 for 12 (.250 avg, .855 OPS) with 1 run scored and 2 RBIs. Hoffpauir also played in 108 games in AAA-ball and he was 104 for 358 (.291 avg, .843 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 14 homers, 53 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The number that really jumps off the stat sheet in the minors for Hoffpauir is the fact that he only whiffed 28 times. This was a good move for the Blue Jays as Hoffpauir will likely battle for a spot on the bench in 2010 in spring training.
