The Blue Jays had a rough time over the weekend against the Angels as they were swept. The Jays are now 7-6 on the season as they have now been outscored 58-57 on the year. They are now 3 games behind the Rays in the A.L. East and they are sitting in 3rd place in the division. The Royals come in for three games this week and then the Blue Jays have a big three game series over the weekend in Tampa.

26-year old lefty starting pitcher Dana Eveland won a uphill battle this spring for a job in the starting rotation and now he is off to a good start to the 2010 season. Eveland is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP so far this year for the Blue Jays. He has only allowed 8 hits in 13 1/3 innings so far this season showing just how good his stuff has been. Eveland came into this season with a 13-17 record, with 1 save, a 5.54 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in 83 games (44 starts) in his major league career. It will be interesting to see if Eveland keeps up the good work or if his good start of 2010 is simply a mirage.

The Blue Jays have acquired 29-year old lefty swinging outfielder Fred Lewis from the Giants for a player to be named later or cash. Lewis played in 122 games for the Giants last season and he was 76 for 295 (.258 avg, .738 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 4 homers, 20 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. He has now played 4 years in his major league career and he is 258 of 931 (.277 avg, .775 OPS) with 169 runs scored, 16 homers, 81 RBIs and 34 stolen bases. This was a good move for the Blue Jays as Lewis will likely be the 4th outfielder for the Jays and maybe more down the road a bit.

Kevin Gregg and Jason Frasor were sharing the closer’s job until last night when Gregg was proclaimed the full time closer by manager Cito Gaston. Gregg has pitched in 4 games for the Blue Jays this season and he is 0-0 with 3 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.23 WHIP. His numbers are a lot better than Frasor’s so far and he has more experience as a closer in his career to date. Frasor has pitched in 5 games for the Jays this year and he is 0-1 with 3 saves, a 6.23 ERA and a 2.54 WHIP. Frasor will be the main set-up man and he will get another chance to close if he pitches well and Gregg either falters or gets hurt.

The Blue Jays have claimed 25-year old righty swinging 3B Shawn Bowman off waivers from the Mets. Bowman played in 91 games in AA-ball last season and he was 102 of 347 (.294 avg, .804 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 9 homers and 44 RBIs. He has played in 439 games in his 7 years in the minors and he is 401 of 1,589 (.252 avg, .723 OPS) with 207 runs scored, 52 homers, 213 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. When in doubt the Blue Jays love adding Canadian players and Bowman is one of them.
