Colby Rasmus is off to a slow start for the Toronto Blue Jays

24-year old lefty swinging CF Colby Rasmus is off to a slow start for the Blue Jays. In his first four games with the Jays, Rasmus is 2 for 16 (.125 avg, .364 OPS) with 1 run scored and 2 RBIs. He has whiffed 6 times so far while only walking 1 time as he has been hacking at the plate. I think that he will settle down soon and show the fans why Blue Jays’ management was so hot to make the deal they did with the Cardinals. Rasmus has a ton of talent and he won’t likely have many of the issues he had with Tony LaRussa with John Farrell. The trade that brought Rasmus to Toronto could look like a steal for them in the near future.

Rajai Davis better start hitting soon or his P.T. is going to get cut by the Toronto Blue Jays

Righty swinging starting CF Rajai Davis better have taken note yesterday of Juan Rivera getting DFA’d. The Blue Jays just aren’t going to keep running players out to the field who aren’t playing to their capabilities. Davis has played in 65 games for the Blue Jays so far this year and he is 52 for 232 (.224 avg, .584 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 1 homer, 17 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. Davis might be the fastest baserunner in all of baseball, but you can’t steal 1B. With Travis Snider coming back to the Jays today, Davis needs to pick up the pace if he wants to continue starting. Don’t forget, Corey Patterson can also handle playing CF.

Where has Aaron Hill’s power went for the Toronto Blue Jays?

29-year old righty swinging 2B Aaron Hill averaged 86.5 runs scored, 31 homers and 88 RBIs in 2009 + 2010 for the Blue Jays. This year though, his power has evaporated so far. Hill has played in 51 games for the Blue Jays so far this year and he is 50 for 201 (.249 avg, .637 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 2 homers, 27 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The Blue Jays’ offense would really take off if Aaron Hill started hitting for power again. It would give them another big threat with the bat behind Adam Lind and Jose Bautista.

Two newcomers are off to slow starts for the Toronto Blue Jays

Starting outfielders Juan Rivera and Rajai Davis are off to rough starts for the Blue Jays. Rivera has played in 9 games so far this year for the Blue Jays and he is 4 for 30 (.133 avg, .390 OPS) with 3 runs scored. The Blue Jays were hoping that Rivera would get off to a fast start so that they could deal him. Rajai Davis’ ankle has been bothering him and his speed is his best asset so it’s no wonder that he’s off to a slow start. Davis has played in 7 games for the Blue Jays so far this year and he is 5 for 32 (.156 avg, .344 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Jays are going to give Davis a few days off to get his ankle right again. The Blue Jays really need both of these guys to start swinging the bats better to get the offense in full gear.

2011 will be the year the Toronto Blue Jays commit to Travis Snider

22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Travis Snider has a ton of pure power and I have a feeling that the Blue Jays will find a starting job for him in 2011. It will likely be RF with Jose Bautista moving to 3B and Edwin Encarnacion finding a new home. Snider has played in 72 games for the Blue Jays this year and he is 61 of 254 (.240 avg, .710 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 9 homers, 24 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He has now played in 173 games in parts of three years with the Jays and he is 141 of 568 (.248 avg, .738 OPS) with 69 runs scored, 20 homers, 66 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. His main problem has been whiffing which he has done 169 times already in his major league career but I don’t think the Jays want to tinker with his swing too much.
