The Toronto Blue Jays have placed 28-year old righty starting pitcher Shaun Marcum on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Marcum has started 17 games for the Blue Jays so far this season and he is 7-4 with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He has now pitched in 106 games (81 starts) in his career with the Jays and he is 31-21 with a 3.84 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. This is a big blow to the Blue Jays are Marcum was pitching really well for them this season. Hopefully Marcum will be able to return in a couple weeks.

28-year old righty starting pitcher Dustin McGowan will miss the rest of the 2010 season. He had surgery yesterday to repair a significant tear to his right rotator cuff. McGowan last pitched in 2008 with the Blue Jays and he was injured trying to rehab. McGowan has pitched in 75 games (56 starts) in parts of four years with the Blue Jays and he is 20-22 with a 4.71 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. This is a shame as McGowan was working hard to get back to Toronto.

The Toronto Blue Jays place Travis Snider on the D.L.

The Blue Jays have placed starting RF Travis Snider on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right wrist. The 22-year old lefty swinging Snider has played in 33 games for the Blue Jays this year and he is 28 of 116 (.241 avg, .806 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 6 homers, 15 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. This is a bad break for Snider as he was just getting into a groove at the plate. The Jays have activated Edwin Encarnacion from the D.L. to replace Snider on the active roster. Encarnacion has played in 10 games for the Jays this year and he is 8 for 36 (.222 avg, .741 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

The Toronto Blue Jays place Brian Tallet on the D.L.

The Blue Jays have placed lefty starting pitcher Brian Tallet on the 15-day disabled list with a case of left arm soreness. Tallet has started 3 games for the Jays this season and he is 1-1 with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Hopefully his forearm injury is the reason that he has given up 6 homers in only 17 2/3 innings this season. It will be interesting to see if Tallet gets his rotation spot back when he gets healthy or if he will be pitching out of the bullpen. The Blue Jays have recalled 23-year old lefty starter Brett Cecil from AAA to replace Tallet in the starting rotation. Cecil has started 2 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. He pitched in 18 games (17 starts) for the Blue Jays last season and he is 7-4 with a 5.30 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. The Blue Jays hope that Cecil pitches well enough to stay in the rotation when Tallet gets healthy.

The Toronto Blue Jays place Edwin Encarnacion on the D.L.

The Blue Jays have placed starting 3B Edwin Encarnacion on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder. He has played in 9 games this season for the Blue Jays and he is 7 for 32 (.219 avg, .677 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Jose Bautista will be the starter at 3B until Encarnacion returns to action. Bautista has played in 16 games for the Jays already this season and he is 12 for 58 (.207 avg, .778 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 3 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Bautista is showing good power so far this season and he is more than capable of handling the hot corner defensively. Newly acquired outfielder Fred Lewis will be taking over for Bautista in LF while Encarnacion is on the shelf. He has played in 5 games for the Jays this season and he is 3 for 16 (.188 avg, .590 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. With Lewis & Bautista in the lineup the Jays have less power but more speed than if Encarnacion was in the starting lineup.
