25-year old lefty starting pitcher Ricky Romero burst onto the scene for the Blue Jays last season. As a rookie he started 29 games for the Jays in 2009 in which he was 13-9 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. He gave up 192 hits last season while whiffing 141 batters in 178 innings. This season Romero has improved by leaps and bounds as he is attacking hitters instead of nibbling. Romero has started 15 games for the Blue Jays this season and he is 6-3 with a 2.85 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Romero has only given up 89 hits in 104 1/3 innings this season while whiffing 101 batters which shows huge improvement. Romero has the stuff to someday win 20 games in a season and he will no doubt be at the top of the Blue Jays’ rotation for quite some while as long as he can stay healthy.

Shawn Camp is pitching the best ball of his career right now for the Toronto Blue Jays

34-year old righty reliever Shawn Camp is really pitching well out of the Blue Jays’ pen right now. He has pitched in 30 games (0 starts) for the Jays this season and he is 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. He has only given up 27 hits while walking 7 batters in 35 1/3 innings for the Jays this year as he has been quite impressive. Camp has been a different pitcher since coming to Toronto as he has worked in 129 games (0 starts) in his three years with the Blue Jays and he is 6-8 with 1 save, a 3.44 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. Before coming to Toronto though Camp was pretty lousy. He pitched in 196 games (0 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he was 10-13 with 6 saves, a 5.27 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. So the pitching coaches of the Blue Jays have done a fine job with Camp in his tenure with the Jays so far.

28-year old righty starting pitcher Shaun Marcum missed all of last season but you wouldn’t know it based on his pitching this season. He has started 8 games for the Blue Jays this season and he is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. He has only given up 41 hits in 55 innings this season which is pretty solid. He has also shown outstanding control as he has only walked 12 batters this season while whiffing 42 batters. The Blue Jays need Marcum to keep pitching well because the offense is hit and miss with the Blue Jays.

Dana Eveland is off to a good start for the Toronto Blue Jays

26-year old lefty starting pitcher Dana Eveland won a uphill battle this spring for a job in the starting rotation and now he is off to a good start to the 2010 season. Eveland is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP so far this year for the Blue Jays. He has only allowed 8 hits in 13 1/3 innings so far this season showing just how good his stuff has been. Eveland came into this season with a 13-17 record, with 1 save, a 5.54 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in 83 games (44 starts) in his major league career. It will be interesting to see if Eveland keeps up the good work or if his good start of 2010 is simply a mirage.

Kevin Gregg is the annointed closer of the Toronto Blue Jays

Blogged under Front Page, General, Throwing Well, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Thursday 15 April 2010 at 11:13 am

Kevin Gregg and Jason Frasor were sharing the closer’s job until last night when Gregg was proclaimed the full time closer by manager Cito Gaston. Gregg has pitched in 4 games for the Blue Jays this season and he is 0-0 with 3 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.23 WHIP. His numbers are a lot better than Frasor’s so far and he has more experience as a closer in his career to date. Frasor has pitched in 5 games for the Jays this year and he is 0-1 with 3 saves, a 6.23 ERA and a 2.54 WHIP. Frasor will be the main set-up man and he will get another chance to close if he pitches well and Gregg either falters or gets hurt.
